Brazil are conspicuous in their absence at the 2024 Olympic Games as the men's tournament is set to see a new champion crowned for the first time in 12 years.

The Selecao have won the most medals (7) in the history of the Games and made a joint-record 14 appearances prior to this year's edition, while claiming gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

But the South Americans won't be defending their title in Paris after failing to qualify, with Argentina and Paraguay securing the two spots from the CONMEBOL region.

The Albiceleste, who won the 2022 World Cup, are now amongst the favourites to tie Hungary and Great Britain's record of three gold medals each.

Newly-crowned Euro 2024 champions Spain will also fancy their chances along with hosts France, who have a knack of winning tournaments on home soil.

La Roja head coach Santi Denia believes a familial approach will be key to emulating the achievement of Luis de la Fuente's side at the European Championship in Germany earlier this month.

"For us it is very important that we can count on the 22 players who are part of this team, this family," Denia was quoted as saying by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

"The good news is that everyone will be in France and the coaches are delighted. It's true that we have to talk about 18+4, but there are other variables and other scenarios have opened up. That's why we have to be very grateful to the IOC and FIFA for giving options so that these four players can take part.

"They are working very well, with a lot of enthusiasm and desire. They want to experience the Games and they are showing it, working as a team, as a family, and we are delighted with them and their work."

Canada will have the chance to defend the women's title, although they are likely to face stiff competition from neighbours USA, who have won a record four gold medals.

Sweden, who lost in the 2016 and 2020 finals, are also amongst the favourites, while African giants Nigeria will be hoping this is their year.
