2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 29
Getafe v Villarreal
Estadio Coliseum
Getafe, Spain
Sunday, 30 March 2025
Kick-off is at 12h00
Villarreal will be determined to get back on the winning trail when they lock horns with Getafe at the Coliseum on Sunday, March 30.
The Yellow Submarine have seen their top-four challenge falter after suffering back-to-back defeats against Alaves and Real Madrid before the international break.
Marcelino's side had ramped up the pressure on Athletic Bilbao as they embarked on a six-match unbeaten run before being pegged by the Babazorros, who ran out narrow 1-0 victors on March 8.
A 2-1 defeat to Los Blancos seven days later left the Castellon outfit eight points adrift of the Lions (4th) with a game in hand and they are tied with Real Betis (6th) on 44 points.
The Azulones are pushing for a top-half finish after winning three of their last five
La Liga encounters to put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
Jose Bordalas' side claimed a surprise 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on March 9 and beat Osasuna by the same scoreline one week later to go level with Sevilla (10th) on 36 points in 11th spot.
Marcelino was pleased with the commitment on display from his players against Real and believes they will achieve their targets with similar performances in the remainder of the season.
"We are very satisfied with how hard we ran and annoyed by the result," he said. "We played a great game. We know that our opponents have very good players and our success in the penalty area ended up deciding the game. I'm proud and satisfied with the team's commitment. The result hurts us.
"We started the first half very well, we scored the goal and we were good in defence, but in 10 minutes the opposition took advantage of our lack of defensive strength and came back at us. Our opponents also play.
"We played a brilliant game in many aspects, with 23 shots and only one goal. We have to persist. That's how the goals will come. It's a shame because of the team's work and the physical commitment.
"If we defend like this, we will lose very little. If we play games in defence like we did today, we'll lose very few points and we'll be at the top of the table. If we play games like the one against Alaves, the opposite will happen."
