On 26 February 2020 Betway announced an exciting initiative in partnership with Ghanaian football Legend Stephen Appiah. The campaign is called Betway 12th Man and it is an innovative sports development initiative, it is a unique concept where Betway will work with ex-football professionals to touch the lives of local communities.
The initiative will work with 10 ex-footballers both male and female, they will embark on a four-month journey that will change their lives. Upon graduation from the programme the participants will be equipped with skills and qualifications that will increase their chances of employment. Betway will work alongside Stephen Appiah to invite various industry experts from areas such as broadcasting, coaching, finance and event management. This will arm the former players with practical skills that they can use within their communities.
Betway Ghana’s Country Manager (Marketing), Kwabena Opong-Nkrumah said the brand was excited about launching this life-changing programme.
“We are excited to be launching such a powerful programme. Betway takes pride in making a meaningful difference in Ghanaian communities. Through the 12th Man programme, we look forward to honouring and upskilling our former football heroes who have done so much for the country.”
The four-month long programme kicks off at the end of February, where participants are starting with a skills acquisition course. Upon completion of this, they will offered the opportunity to upskill themselves further by obtaining an accredited licence through the Ghana Football Association couching course.
The football stars will then garner some of the behind-the-scenes planning that comes with running a professional football club when they complete a Club Administration and Project Management course.
Stephen Appiah said the Betway 12th man initiative is very dear to his heart.
“As a former footballer, I am honoured to lead such a life changing programme. I see many of my friends I shared dressing rooms and cracked jokes with go through very difficult times. I believe the Betway 12th man is such an important initiative to give back to these legends who have invested so much in the game. Our football is where it is today because of the time and effort they gave and I have to applaud Betway for recognising and upskilling them in such an impactful manner.”
