Today we’re going to take a look at some of the best Rugby players to have ever graced the sport. Considering how difficult it would be to compare a Lock to a Winger, we’re not going to be numbering this one, but rather paying tribute to some of the biggest names (and biggest men) in Rugby.
Schalk Burger
Part of the 2007 Rugby World Cup winning team, Schalk Burger is highly decorated player. He was also named IRB Player of the Year in 2004 and holds the record for most appearances by a Springbok Flanker. His extremely physical playstyle has also earned him a total of 6 yellow cards in international
Rugby.
Michael Jones
Jones is widely regarded as the best flanker to ever play for the All Blacks and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2003. After retiring from the sport, he became the official head coach of the Samoa Rugby team, thus continuing his legacy
Brian O’Driscoll
This captain had a very impressive career as the most capped Irish player and the second most capped player in rugby history (120 caps). He holds the record for most tries scored by any center, ever. In the Six Nations Tournament, he was named Player of the Tournament in 2006, 2007, and 2009. O’Driscoll helped Ireland to achieve their first Grand Slam in 61 years during the Six Nations Tournament in 2009.
David Campese
Named Player of the Tournament in the 1991 World Cup, David Campese is an Australian Legend. A consummate entertainer on the field, he liked to call himself “Rugby’s first millionaire” before Rugby players were even allowed to earn a profit. While most of us wouldn’t cut it on the Rugby field, you might be lucky enough to be a millionaire by
playing any of the fun casino games at Betway.
Percy Montgomery
Montgomery debuted vs. the British and Irish Lions in 1997 and, by the time of his retirement in 2008, he earned two titles and over 50 caps. Despite being prevented from playing for S.A while he lived in Wales, he remains one of the very best to come from South Africa.
Richie McCaw
After being named Man of the Match after his debut against Ireland, Richie McCaw went on to be named captain in 2006. He was absolutely crucial in leading his team to the Rugby World Cup title in 2011 and, along the way, was named the IRB Player of the Year in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
Gareth Edwards
According to BBC, Edwards is one of the best rugby players to ever wear a Welsh Jersey. Not only does he have great sideburns, but Rugby World Magazine named him the greatest player of all-time in 2003. Edwards even received the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 2007 New Year Honors for his tremendous contributions to Rugby internationally.
David Pocock
David Pocock is an Australian open-side flanker and vice-captain for the Brumbies Super Rugby team. He debuted for the Wallabies against Hong Kong in 2008, and in 2015, he scored two tries in the opening 2015 Rugby World Cup match against Fiji.
Dan Carter
Holding the world record for points, overtaking Jonny Wilkinson, Dan Carter has become an All Black legend. New Zealand has won every single match that Carter has scored a try in. The New England Patriots even tried to recruit him, but owing to a torn Achilles tendon, he never made the transfer.
Jonah Lomu
Regarded as the first true global superstar of Rugby Union, Jonah Lomu earned 63 caps and scored 185 points for the All Blacks from 1994 to 2002. His fame came to a head when he scored 15 tries in the 1995 World Cup and was considered one of the best players of the tournament. Sadly, he never won a World Cup in his career.
