Prima Pramac Racing's Jorge Martin insists he will be looking to capitalise on every chance he gets to stay ahead of Francesco Bagnaia in the championship going into the Thailand Grand Prix on Sunday, October 27.

The Spaniard has opened up a 20-point lead over the reigning two-time champion in the riders' standings after finishing in the podium in each of the last four races.

Martin won the sprint on Phillip Island and started in pole position at the Australian Grand Prix. He got a good start off the grid, but a mistake allowed Bagnaia and Marc Marquez to close right up on him, leading to an enthralling tussle between the trio with 16 laps to go.

The 26-year-old rider traded places with his compatriot on a couple of occasions with left laps to go before having to settle for P2 - his 13th podium of the season.

Martin admitted to enjoying his battle with Bagnaia and declared himself satisfied with his efforts Down Under even if he couldn't match the pace of Marquez.

"I can't say I'm not satisfied with this weekend. After the pole and the victory in the sprint, I would have liked to win today as well, but the sensations at the rear were not the same, I couldn't fully unload the power to the ground," he said.

"Pecco and Marc obviously improved as well. In the race I got a good start , although then I made a mistake in turn 1 where I almost crashed and they caught me. Pecco overtook me and from there on I had to change strategy and started pushing hard.

"When Marc arrived I tried to respond by giving my best, but my chances of winning were less than his. Overall though, I think I got the most out of this weekend.

"I will continue to take advantage of every chance I have to increase my lead in the championship. It was nice to have at least a little fight with Pecco today, we usually chase each other at a distance and I liked that.

"Last weekend I lost 11 points, here I gained 10 back. Hard to say what will happen race by race."

2024 Australian Grand Prix results:
