Gresini Racing's Marc Marquez admits he needs to practice more patience as he heads to the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, November 3 seeking his fourth win of the season.

The Spaniard was in confident mood going into the Thailand Grand Prix after he put on a masterclass to claim victory in the Australian Grand Prix seven days earlier.

Marques finished fourth in the sprint and despite the wet conditions on race day, he showed serious pace to challenge Ducati Lenovo Team's Francesco Bagnaia for the lead.

However, the former six-time world champion crashed out on turn 8 with 13 laps to go after losing the front end of his bike on the curb.

Marquez is only 11 points ahead of Ducati Lenovo Team's Enea Bastianini in the battle for third place in the riders' standings and he acknowledges he should've bided his time in Buriram.

"We were the fastest today but now, two or three hours after the race, maybe we weren't patient enough in that moment of the race," Marquez said.

"It's true that it was super tricky because I wasn't able to overtake in a clear way Bagnaia. I was always planning a very clear overtake because I had the speed and I said, 'We will have more chances'.

"Always I was trying to push, attack; then, when it was not possible, to cool down the front tyre, [then] attack again. I was doing always a bit the 'elastic' during the race and on that second attack I saw that I was much faster.

"I tried to not give up and I tried to follow him, and just one-and-a-half degrees more in that corner [turn 8] and I lose the front and I couldn't save - was very close. We are humans, we do mistakes, and today it was my turn."

2024 Thailand Grand Prix results:

Winner: Francesco Bagnaia - Ducati Lenovo Team

Second Place: Jorge Martin - Prima Pramac Racing

Third Place: Pedro Acosta - Red Bull GasGas Tech3
