Tokyo, Japan
July 23 - August 8, 2021

Ghana will be making their 15th appearance in the Olympic Games and they did not attend the 1980 Olympics because of the United States boycott.

We take a closer look at some of Ghana's leading medal contenders:

Sulemanu Tetteh (boxing)

The experienced boxer is heading back to the Olympic Games having represented his country at the 2012 event which was hosted by London, England.

Tetteh competed in the men's light flyweight division and he lost in the first round to Jantony Ortíz of Puerto Rico and he was one of 12 athletes to receive scholarships from the Ghana Olympic Committee to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Tetteh will be looking to use his experience from the 2012 Olympics and win Ghana's fourth boxing medal in the global competition and emulate Clement Quartey, Eddie Blay, and Prince Amartey.

Flings Owusu-Agyapong (athletics)

The experienced sprinter competed in the 100 meters and the 4x100 meters relay at the 2016 Olympics and she was also the flag bearer for the Ghanaian team at the opening ceremony.

Owusu-Agyapong was very influential for Ghana's women's relay team as they won silver at the 2016 African Championships in Durban in June 2016 in a time of 44.05.

The 32-year-old then finished fourth in her heat of the 100 meters in a time of 11.43 at the 2016 Olympics but did not advance to the semi-finals and she will now be eager to go all the way and scoop her first Olympic medal.

“Going in, I stood at the line, and I thought I was going to be so nervous just because it’s the Olympics,” Owusu-Agyapong said when reflecting on her 2016 Olympics experience.

“I was looking around and then I was like ‘Wait, this is 100 meters. It’s what you run all the time.’”

Christian Amoah (weightlifting)

The promising weightlifter was the youngest athlete to take part in weightlifting at the 2016 Olympics and also the inaugural male Ghanaian to compete in weightlifting at the modern Olympics.

Amoah, who currently competes in the 85 kg event, won three silver medals at the recent 2021 African Seniors Weightlifting Championship in Kenya.

Having also competed in the men's 77 kg at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 21-year-old will be keen to create more history by becoming the first Ghanaian to win a medal in weightlifting in the Olympics.

Benjamin Azamati (athletics)

The promising sprinter emerged as an Olympic hopeful for Ghana in the sprints after running 100 meters in 10.02 seconds HT at the 2019 Ghana's Fastest Human competition.

Azamati made history by breaking a 22-year national record in the 100 meters held by Leo Myles Mills on 26 March 2021 in Texas, USA by clocking 9.97 seconds to qualify him for the Tokyo Olympics.

The 2019 African Games gold medalist, who also competes in the 200 meters, will be hoping to become the first Ghanaian to win a medal in athletics in the Olympics.
