Number one seed Simona Halep leads the women’s singles field as the 2019 Australian Open gets underway at Melbourne Park on Monday, 14 January.
The Romanian was the runner-up at the tournament last year, but went on to enjoy a fine 2018 overall – she won her first Grand Slam title (the French Open) and ended the year as number one on the rankings.
Caroline Wozniacki is the defending champion but will have her work cut out to win a second Grand Slam title.
One of Halep’s main threats will come from last year’s Australian Open champion, Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane has revealed that she is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis but is confident that she can still compete at the top level despite the debilitating condition.

US Open champion Naomi Osaka and German left-hander Angelique Kerber are also contenders for the crown, with the latter having adopted a more aggressive approach under new coach Rainer Schuttler.
Serena Williams is seeded only 16th but is always a threat in the Grand Slams.
Finally, don’t count out Serena Williams, who is a seven-time Australian Open champion – most recently in 2017 when she was eight weeks pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia.
The 37-year-old had a famous meltdown at last year’s US Open final, but will be determined to bounce back and redeem herself – especially with the tantalising prize of equalling Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
