2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 3
Manchester United v Liverpool
Stamford Bridge
London, England
Sunday, 1 September 2024
Kick-off is at 17h00

One of the fiercest rivalries in Premier League football sees Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday, September 1 in the late kick-off.

They are England's two most successful clubs domestically, with United winning the title 20 times and the Reds just one behind them on 19 after the heroics of Jurgen Klopp's team in 2019–20.

The Merseyside giants have had the upper hand in recent meetings, coming out on top in five of their last 10 match-ups and losing just once.

Erik ten Hag's side took points off their arch-rivals on both occasions last season after drawing both home (2-2) and away (0-0) in the league.

Ten Hag will be demanding a response from his players after suffering an agonising 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex on August 24 which saw Joao Pedro score a last-gasp winner in the 95th minute.

United had kicked off proceedings with a 1-0 victory over Fulham at the Theatre of Dreams on August 16 and they sit 11th in the standings, tied on three points with Chelsea (8th), West Ham (9th), the Cottagers (10th), Aston Villa (12th) and Brentford (13th).

Liverpool maintained their perfect start under Arne Slot with a 2-0 triumph over the Bees at Anfield on August 25, having beaten newly-promoted Ipswich by the same scoreline at Portman Road eight days earlier.

Slot's side occupy fourth spot behind Arsenal (3rd), Brighton (2nd) and league leaders Manchester City on goal difference.

Ten Hag wants to see better game management from his players after they conceded late goals against City in the Community Shield and the Seagulls in the league.

"We have good potential but we have to keep going until the end because where we concede, in the Community Shield, almost in stoppage time. Now, in stoppage time, we concede a goal and you have to keep going until the end," the Dutchman insisted.

"The game is finished when the referee whistles three times and that is what we didn't do well. Game management – we should improve that."

Slot feels Liverpool have a point to prove against their top-six rivals after struggling to dominate the games against Ipswich and Brentford.

"If I'm honest, I think most players are quite used to what we want. But then it has a lot to do with us doing not so many things different to what Jurgen [Klopp] did in the past," the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

"So there are only slight changes maybe but most of it is the same. So if we lose the ball, how aggressive we are, how hard we run back because they don't want to concede.

"But some details are a bit different but it also has to do with the opponent you face. Ipswich and Brentford made it quite difficult for us but I'm not expecting them in the top six this season. So we have a lot to prove against the teams that can finish in the top six."
