WBA Welterweight Championship
Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner
Sunday, 20 January 2019
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, United States
Adrien Broner will battle for a potentially career-defining win when he faces WBA Welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States on Sunday 20 January 2019.
Having once been touted as the heir to Floyd Mayweather’s throne – and after a draw with Jessie Vargas in his last bout in April 2018 – the 29-year-old American is looking to shrug off a reputation of being a career underachiever.
There are doubts about whether Broner can step up against high-class opposition such as Pacquiao, as his three career defeats have come against current or former world champions in Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia.
‘Pac Man’, meanwhile, came out of retirement and initially seemed to sully his legacy with a contentious defeat to Australian Jeff Horn in 2017.
But the 40-year-old veteran bounced back in style in July last year when he defeated Lucas Martin Matthysse on a TKO in Kuala Lumpur to win the WBA Welterweight championship.
Broner may be 11 years younger than Pacquiao, but the veteran has legendary stamina and enters the fight as the favourite. In fact, the Filipino has declared his intention to knock the American out and inflict a fourth career defeat on him.
