Six of this season’s current top ten go head-to-head in Matchday 3 in the English Premier League as the early season push for places intensifies, culminating with the latest edition of Monday Night Football featuring Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford to tackle Manchester United.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS VS MANCHESTER CITY

THE MOLINEAX STADIUM

Top-flight football is well and truly back at the Molineax as Birmingham’s sole representative in England’s top-flight look to cement their status amongst the elite. One of Wolves’ many summer signings Raul Jimenez got off the mark in the 2-2 opening day draw with Everton and was unlucky not to double his tally against Leicester, seeing his first-half effort crash off the post as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men slipped to their first defeat of the season. Standing in their way in Saturday’s early kick-off are last season’s defending champions Manchester City, who followed up their 2-0 victory over Arsenal by hitting Huddersfield for six in their first home fixture of the campaign.

City have won the last five matches against this weekend’s opponents in all competitions since a 2-1 defeat in the league in October 2010. Wolves have won three of their previous six league meetings with Man City at the Molineax. The pair clashed as recently as the 4th round of the League Cup last year, Pep Guardiola’s side securing a 4-1 penalty shootout victory after a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time.

ARSENAL VS WEST HAM UNITED

THE EMIRATES STADIUM

Two teams at the wrong end of the early table still searching for their respective first victories of the season, Arsenal and West Ham, will do battle in one of two hotly anticipated London derbies this weekend. Unai Emery will be eager to get his Gunners firing after back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea put an early end to his honeymoon period at the North London club. West Ham United, under new management of their own, have seen their side concede six goals in in their opening two games leaving Manuel Pellegrini, a title winner with Man City, with work to do to plug a leaky defence that shipped a league-high 68 goals under David Moyes last season.

The Irons were the first team to inflict defeat against Arsenal at their Emirates home, back in April 2007. Since then though, in 22 matches in all competitions, West Ham have won just once more. Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate scored either side of half-time, at the Emirates again, on the opening day of the 2015-16 campaign to seal a 2-0 win ending a nine-match losing run against Arsenal in the process. The corresponding fixture last season ended 4-1 to the hosts with Alexandre Lacazette scoring twice in the final minutes.

NEWCASTLE UNITED VS CHELSEA

ST JAMES PARK

In November 2012, Rafa Benitez was appointed Interim Manager at Chelsea replacing Roberto di Matteo, and he led the Blues to UEFA Europa League glory barely six months later. On Sunday he will take charge of his Newcastle United side against his former employers once more following their 3-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season. Ayoze Perez scored twice to send the Toon Army home happy and hammered the final nail into the coffin of Antonio Conte’s reign in charge of Chelsea.

Newcastle United are unbeaten in their last five home matches against Chelsea since February 2013, winning four and drawing one, scoring ten goals in the process whilst conceding just one. They will be eager to finally get all three points on the board after being denied a first win last time out. Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge saved Kenedy’s last gasp penalty to ensure a share of the spoils as the duo drew 0-0, a week after their 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham. Chelsea on the other hand, have two wins from two under new head coach Maurizio Sarri as they prepare for home ties against Liverpool and Man United in September and October.
