2019/20 Premier League
28th Season
England
9 August 2019 – 25 July 2020
The race for the
Premier League top four positions will resume when the campaign starts after being halted by the coronavirus pandemic last March.
The teams will have to compete for the spots in next season's UEFA Champions League without their fans as Premier League games will be played behind closed doors.
Current log leaders, Liverpool FC have already qualified for Europe's most prestigious competition which leaves three spots up for grabs.
Manchester City, who are the defending champions, occupy the second spot on the league standings - five points above third-placed Leicester City.
However, City have been banned from all UEFA club competitions for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body due to breaches of the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulation.
This means if City secure a top-four finish in the league - the fifth-placed team will qualify for the Champions League, but this could still change if the Citizens with their appeal against the ban.
“I trust my club 100% in what they have done. They have explained the reasons why to me," City manager Pep Guardiola said.
“We are going to fight like we have fought in every single game every day we are together until the end of the season. We are optimistic that at the end the truth will prevail and next season we will be in the Champions League.”
Chelsea, who are placed fourth on the league log, will be under pressure as they are only three points above fifth-placed Manchester United.
