Formula One has had many great champions since the first drivers' championship was awarded in 1950.
We take a look at the most decorated drivers in the history of the auto-racing competition:
Alain Prost
Active Years: 1980-1993
Titles: 4
The retired French driver is widely considered as one of the greatest Formula One drivers ever, having won four world titles.
Prost clinched his first two championships between 1985 and 1986 with McLaren, before adding two more trophies in 1989 with McLaren and in 1993 as a Williams driver.
Sebastian Vettel
Active Years: Since 2006
Titles: 4
The Ferrari driver has also won four world titles and is also regarded by many as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.
Vettel remarkably won four consecutive trophies between 2010 and 2013 with Red Bull Racing and in doing so he emulated Formula One icon, Michael Schumacher.

Fangio, who passed away in July 1995, won his trophies with four different teams (Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Maserati), a feat that has not been repeated.
Fangio took four straight crowns between 1954 and 1957, and he has been praised by Vettel.

"Certainly, we will never match him in how successful he had been in such a short time and so little races.
Obviously, back then it was different. Racing was different," Vettel told EFE.
"To have achieved what he did achieve in that time, where a lot of things needed to come together, the cars
were not as reliable and all of that, still he managed to be that successful, I think he's probably the best we've ever had in terms of putting it together, in terms of skill, in terms of how brave they were at the time."
Lewis Hamilton
Active Years: Since 2007
Titles: 6
The British superstar is the king of Formula One at the moment as he is the reigning champion.
Hamilton is the second most successful driver in the history of the sport with six trophies (five with Mercedes, one with McLaren). He looks destined to clinch a record seventh world title, hence why he is considered by some to be the greatest of all-time.
Michael Schumacher
Active Years: 1991–2006, 2010–2012
Titles: 7
The Formula One icon remains the most decorated driver in the history of the sport having won a record seven world titles during his active years.
Schumacher, who is widely regarded as the greatest driver of all-time, is the only man to have won five consecutive trophies between 2000 to 2004 with Ferrari, after winning his first two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995.
