Aleix Espargaro will be hoping to keep his ambitions of winning the 2022 MotoGP world title alive by winning the Aragon Grand Prix.

The Aprilia rider narrowly missed out on a podium spot in last year's Aragon MotoGP as he finished fourth having started sixth on the grid.

Espargaro is struggling for form having failed to secure a podium spot in the last six races in the current term - finishing sixth at the recent San Marino MotoGP on September 4.

After making a good start, Espargaro stuck close and battled hard not to lose contact with the leaders, thereby defending positions and he ultimately finished sixth.

Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia won the 2022 San Marino MotoGP with Enea Bastianini of Ducati and Aprilia's Maverick Vinales finishing second and third respectively.

Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha is still placed at the top of the 2022 riders' standings and he is followed by Bagnaia as the battle for the MotoGP world title continues.

Espargaro finds himself in the third spot in the standings and he will climb up to second place if he wins the Aragon MotoGP.

"I’m satisfied with the result because I was unable to be particularly fast throughout the weekend. Even compared with Maverick, I just didn’t have the same pace on this track," Espargaro said after the San Marino MotoGP.

"I said at the beginning of the season that Austria and Misano would be complicated races for me. At the end of the day, I got through them, maintaining the same gap that I had over Fabio [Quartararo] before Assen.

"Starting farther ahead would probably have given us a chance to do better but in the early part of the race I still managed to do some good lap times. There will be more favourable weekends ahead and that’s where the championship will be decided."

Ducati are placed at the top of the Constructors' championship standings and they are followed by Yamaha and Aprilia respectively.
