2019 Formula1 World Championship
Round 5, Spanish Grand Prix
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
12 May 2019
Sebastian Vettel will chase a first win of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship when Round 5, the Spanish Grand Prix, is held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday 12 May.
The Ferrari driver had a slow start to the campaign – coming home in fourth and fifth in the first two races – but in the past couple of rounds in China and Azerbaijan he has shown improved form, claiming a third-place finish in each.
This has seen the four-time World Champion move up to third place on the Drivers’ standings, though he is a significant 35 points adrift of leader Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes).
Ferrari have shown signs of the pace needed to challenge Mercedes’ dominance at the front of the pack, but thus far they have been unable to exploit this fully in both qualifying and the races on Sunday.
Vettel and his teammate Charles Leclerc will hope that a return to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya – where Ferrari had excellent pre-season pace – sees them finally break the ‘Silver Arrows’ stranglehold on P1 and P2.
As for Vettel and his history at the Spanish Grand Prix, he has managed just one win at the circuit: 2011 when he was en route to winning the second of his four Drivers’ Championships with Red Bull.
