Juventus vs Chievo
2018/19 Serie A
Allianz Stadium, Turin
Monday, January 21st
Kick-off at 19:30 (7:30pm) GMT
Juventus will play their first league match of 2019 when they welcome Chievo Verona to the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Monday evening as they look to extend their domestic unbeaten run to 20 games. A win for the Old Lady would see them stretch their lead over Napoli at the summit of Serie A to nine points.
Since their last match in the division – a 2-1 win over Sampdoria in December – Juve have enjoyed a swift return to action following a fortnight’s rest during the festive period. The Bianconeri booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia by beating Bologna 2-0 away from home, before securing the Italian Supercup with a 1-0 win over arch-rivals AC Milan on Wednesday with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring from the penalty spot to help himself to his first major piece of silverware since making the move to Italy from Madrid.
Juventus recent results: (all competitions)
16/01/2019 – Juventus 1-0 Milan
12/01/2019 – Bologna 0-2 Juventus
29/12/2018 – Juventus 2-1 Sampdoria
Chievo find themselves rooted to the foot of the table after mustering just one victory from their opening 19 encounters – a 1-0 win over ten-man Frosinone in their final match of 2018. Coupled with the three-point deduction they suffered at the start of the season for false accounting, L Gialloblu have really struggled to match the pace of the division and already find themselves nine points adrift of safety.
Chievo Verona recent results:
29/12/2018 – Chievo 1-0 Frosinone
26/12/2018 – Sampdoria 2-0 Chievo
22/12/2018 – Chievo 1-1 Inter Milan
Chievo have suffered just one defeat in their last eight Serie A matches since going down 2-0 at home to Sassuolo at the start of November, including impressive draws against Napoli, Lazio and Inter Milan respectively – all of whom currently occupy spots in the top five in the league.
Massimiliano Allegri’s men on the other hand have won all but one of their ten home matches thus far, dropping points in a 1-1 draw against Genoa in October.
Verona have a serious uphill battle on their hands if they are to take anything off of a rampant Juve outfit. They have not beaten the defending champions for the last seven seasons in over nine years since an historic 1-0 shutout in January 2010.
The Old Lady are aiming for a seventh successive Serie A win over Chievo having won 12 of the last 13 matches between them, including a comfortable 3-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season when Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala rounded off the scoring in the second half following Perparim Hetemaj’s first-half own-goal had put the home side in front.
Juve were made to work a lot harder when the pair clashed earlier in the campaign, clawing themselves back from a goal down to snatch the game right at the death following Federico Bernadeschi’s stoppage time winner.
