2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 16

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal

Molineux
Wolverhampton, England
Saturday, 12 November 2022
Kick-off is at 19h45

Arsenal will look to enter the World Cup break still ahead of the chasing pack as they target a third straight win over Wolves on Saturday, November 12 at Molineux.

The Gunners did the league double over the Black Country club last season, winning 1-0 away from home before emerging 2-1 victors at the Emirates Stadium two weeks later.

Mikel Arteta's side maintained their two-point lead over Manchester City in the standings by beating London rivals Chelsea 1-0 last Sunday thanks to Gabriel's 63rd-minute goal.

Arteta praised his players for a "mature" performance against the Blues, adding that he saw all the right qualities on display as they continue to make progress under his stewardship.

"It's another step forward. To prove ourselves that we can do it, that we can play at that level against these sorts of players and teams, and hopefully they will have more belief," the Spaniard said.

"I think we are a really young team but today we played like a mature team, we use the right words. Composure, it's determination, it's quality, it's courage to do it in these scenarios, and that's the steps we have to take as a team, and today we have taken that step."

Wolves are under new management after Julen Lopetegui was named as Bruno Lage's successor last weekend.

Lopetegui initially turned the West Midlands outfit down following his dismissal by Sevilla last month, having opted to stay in Spain with his father, who had fallen ill.

However, the Spaniard will take charge of the first team after this weekend's game, with Steve Davis set to oversee the visit of the league leaders.

Wanderers have won just one of their six games since Lage was sacked in the wake of the 2-0 defeat to West Ham on October 1.

The 3-2 reverse to Brighton last Saturday extended their winless run to four outings and Davis expressed his frustration with the result, claiming they should have taken all three points on home soil.

"I'm delighted we scored two goals, but I'm really disappointed with the three we conceded. They could all have been avoided, so that was the disappointment. We spoke about that after, because we were soft and really easy to score against," he said.

"We showed a lot of resilience at times, but then at moments around the box, we just didn't defend well or make good decisions. I've shown that frustration to them today because I'm frustrated. We should have won that game today.

"But in the last three or four games, there has been lots of positives that we have to lean on, take with us, and take forwards when he [Lopetegui] takes on his new job."
