Mexico v New Zealand Confed Cup Match Preview

2017 FIFA Confederations Cup
Group A - Mexico v New Zealand
Wednesday, 21 June 2017
Fisht Olympic Stadium, Sochi, 20h00 CAT

Mexico will look to dominate New Zealand when the teams meet for a Group A clash in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. The match is set for the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi on Wednesday, kick-off at 20h00 CAT. Mexico come into the match on something of a high after they twice fought back from being a goal down to draw 2-2 with European champions Portugal on Sunday night. Javier Hernandez and Hector Moreno both netted to ensure El Tri avoided a defeat in their opening clash.

New Zealand, in contrast, slumped to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of hosts Russia in the tournament opener on Saturday night, suggesting that the All Whites are in for a tough time at the Confederations Cup. Anthony Hudson’s side are placed at the bottom of Group A and cannot afford another loss, while Mexico will see victory as a major step toward the semifinals, which they have not appeared in since 2005. El Tri have dominated clashes against New Zealand down the years, claiming five wins and suffering just one defeat from six meetings according to FIFA’s statistics.

Mexico famously beat NZ 9-3 on aggregate in Intercontinental Playoffs for qualification for the last World Cup in 2014, while the teams’ most recent clash saw the North Americans win 2-1 in a friendly in Nashville in October last year.
