Alexander Zverev will be confident of defeating Brandon Nakashima when the duo meet in a 2022 Roland Garros third-round match on Friday.

The current world number three overcame a woeful start to reach the third round on Wednesday saving a match point in a 2-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 7-5 win over Argentine starlet Sebastian Baez.

Zverev's career highlights include titles at the 2018 and the 2021 ATP Finals, and a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but he has never won a grand slam tournament.

The 25-year-old, who reached his first and only major final at the 2020 US Open, described his match against Baez as incredible.

"I said to him that how he feels now is the worst you're going to feel on a tennis court," Zverev said.

"It was such an incredible match. I know how it feels, as I lost the US Open final from being two sets to love up. I was two points away from winning it and I lost 7-6 in the fifth.

"You always get better from it. I wish him nothing but the best, he's an unbelievably great kid and he's going to do a lot of great things in this sport."

Meanwhile, Nakashima defeated Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 [6], 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday in order to set up a third found clash with Zverev.

In the previous round of the Roland Garros, the 20-year-old American defeated Polish star Kamil Majchrzak (6-4, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6 [3], 6-2) on Monday.

Nakashima broke into the top 100 in August 2021 after reaching his first two ATP Tour finals and his breakout success qualified him for the 2021 Next Generation ATP Finals.

Zverev and Nakashima will meet for the second time in an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event.

It was German star Zverev who won 7-5, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the 2020 US Open second-round match which remains their only meeting.
