2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 38

Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Anfield
Liverpool, England
Sunday, 22 May 2022
Kick-off is at 17h00

Liverpool will look to continue their recent dominance of Wolves when the two teams meet on the final day of the Premier League season at Anfield on Sunday, May 22.

The Reds completed the league double over Wanderers in each of the last two campaigns and came away with a narrow 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at Molineux on December 4.

Indeed the Black Country outfit have only ever beaten the Merseysiders once in the Premier League era, back in December 2010 when they triumphed 1-0 away from home.

Jurgen Klopp's side extended their impressive undefeated run in the top flight to 17 matches with a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park last week to remain in the hunt for the title.

They trail Manchester City by four points ahead of their catch-up game against Southampton on Tuesday, May 17 and will be buoyed by Saturday's FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Klopp has hailed the efforts of his players to keep the pressure on City during an intense second half of the season, which has seen them cope with a jam-packed schedule to lift the EFL Cup as well this year.

"It's an insane second part of the season. If it's not enough in the end, we have to congratulate City and that's how it is and then we go from there and will try it again and these kind of things," the German said.

"We drew twice against City, so we didn't lose points there. We lost them somewhere else, so we have to make sure that next year we either beat them or draw against them and win more of the other games."

Wolves will miss out on European football next term after a 1-1 draw against relegated Norwich last Sunday left them without a win in six outings.

The best the West Midlands club can hope for is eighth place, although they face competition from Leicester, who trail them by three points with a superior goal difference.

Lage expressed his disappointment at not giving the supporters a victory to celebrate in their final home game of the season, conceding that it has been far too easy for opponents to breach their goal of late.

"Firstly, I'm frustrated over the result, but also over the history of the results of the last month, April and May - it's been easy to score goals against us. In the Premier League, no matter who it's against, whether it's the first in the table or the last in the table, it's always hard to come back," he said.

"We wanted to finish the season at home with a good performance and a good victory for the fans because they supported us all season. They've been there for us since day one and they've been amazing supporting us."
