Matchday 36

Manchester City will look to take another step towards retaining the Premier League title when Newcastle arrive at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, May 8.

The Citizens briefly dropped to second place when Liverpool beat the Magpies 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, but climbed back to the summit with a 4-0 victory over Leeds later that same evening.

Pep Guardiola's side remain a point ahead of the Reds with four matches remaining in the season and the Spaniard left no doubt as to what is needed for City to win a fourth crown in five years.

"It's in our hands," Guardiola said. "Wolves, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa. We win (them all and) we will be champions - we drop points, Liverpool will be champions.

"We know exactly what we need to do - win our games. Still it is a privilege and an honour to try win back-to-back titles and four Premier Leagues in five years. Right now it's not too much complicated, they are going to win their games."

The Tynesiders have all but secured their safety with three games left to play after winning four on the spin to go 11 points clear of the relegation zone in 10th spot.

Their impressive run was ended by the Merseysiders this past weekend and Howe admits the Toon still have plenty of work to do if they want to challenge higher up in the standings.

"I don't think we quite got going. I thought we made a bright start to the game but we're slightly disappointed with our own performance," Howe said.

"Individually I don't think we hit our top levels, which meant collectively we didn't quite hit the levels we have recently. We probably didn't quite have that sustained pressure we were looking for. The second half was better without that big chance ever really coming.

"There were one or two bright sparks, but it's slightly disappointing compared to our previous levels. I've seen progress from where we have been, but on the other side there's a lot of work to do."
