2019 ICC Cricket World Cup
England and Wales
30 May – 14 July
The trio of New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies will be hoping to spring a surprise at the
2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July.
New Zealand got as far as the final in the 2015 edition, but they were ultimately beaten by co-hosts and arch rivals Australia.
While many thought that was the Black Caps’ best hope of winning the tournament, English conditions may suit them well, and Kane Williamson’s side (who open their campaign with a match against Sri Lanka) could be one of the dark horses for the title.
The same could be said of Pakistan (who were World Champions back in 1992), as they bring a fine bowling attack to the 2019 CWC which will be spearheaded by the likes of Hassan Ali, youngster Shaheen Afridi and Haris Sohail.
Pakistan’s opening opponents will be the West Indies at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Friday 31 May. The Caribbean team has a rich history at the CWC (they won the first two editions in 1975 and 1979 – both of which were on English soil) and will be aiming to return to the top table of ODI cricket.
They have classy all-rounder Jason Holder as captain, while veteran Chris Gayle may be turning 40 later this year but remains one of the most destructive and powerful players in the limited overs game.
