Rory McIlroy will be determined to become the eighth golfer to win the
Players Championship more than once and the first European to do so.
What to know about McIlroy
The Northern Irish superstar turned professional on 18 September 2007, the day before the Quinn Direct British Masters and finished in 95th place on the European Tour's Order of Merit list as an 18-year-old.
McIlroy is currently on 42 professional tournament wins, including 27 PGA Tour victories, and he is also a four-time major champion, winning the 2011 US Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, and 2014 PGA Championship.
News
The four-time Vardon Trophy winner was in action in the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida, USA, where he finished 15th.
McIlroy is currently placed second in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), having spent over a hundred weeks in the number one position during his career.
Why McIlroy is among the favourites
The 35-year-old won The Players Championship in 2019 and the defining moment for him came at the 15th hole, where after a drive that landed in the fairway bunker, he blasted his approach to 13 feet to set up an unlikely birdie.
This season, McIlroy has made two starts on the PGA Tour, highlighted by a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and he will be targeting his second victory of the season at The Players Championship.
Quotes
"There's pros and cons to it [equipment changes], and it's a blessing and a curse at the same time that we sort of have to go through these 12-month club cycles," McIlroy said on Sunday after the Arnold Palmer Invitational, according to Sky Sports.
"I probably just didn't give myself enough time. It can look good on the Trackman and it can look good on the range at home at the Bear's Club or on the golf course, but once you get out here in these conditions that's where it really shows itself and it just wasn't quite ready."
