Prima Pramac Racing's Jorge Martin is hoping for a more consistent 2024 season in a bid to challenge the Ducati riders for the MotoGP title, starting with the
Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, March 10.
The Spaniard was Francesco Bagnaia's closest rival in 2023 and his victory at the Thailand Grand Prix kept the pressure on the Ducati Lenovo Team rider with three races to go.
However, Martin finished behind Bagnaia in the Malaysian Grand Prix (P4) and the Qatar Grand Prix (P10), while he failed to complete the Valencian Community Grand Prix to hand the championship to the Italian.
The 26-year-old still amassed 428 points after finishing on the podium eight times, which also included wins at the German Grand Prix, the San Marino Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix.
Martin had problems during testing though, and is hoping they can be sorted out before qualifying starts for the season opener.
"There's something that isn't working well. I can't ride as I would like to and when I accelerate it creates a lot of chattering," he told DAZN after the test in Lusail.
"This is also why the mini-race test was a disaster. I tried to push but the pace wasn't there and I was still very far from Bagnaia.
"I also fell when entering turn 14. We have to review when the throttle is opened because the vibrations cause damage to the tyres.
"In general I'm calm. Besides the setback I managed to keep a good pace with worn tyres. Hopefully it can be fixed so that we can be more consistent in the GPs.
"Consistency at the beginning of the season could put me among the favourites for the title."
2023 Qatar Grand Prix results:
Winner: Fabio Di Giannantonio - Gresini Racing
Second Place: Francesco Bagnaia - Ducati Lenovo Team
Third Place: Luca Marini - Mooney VR46 Racing Team
