20 July 2017 - Manchester United v Manchester City
NRG Stadium, Houston
03h30 CAT (21 July)
Manchester United and Manchester City will renew their rivalry in the USA leg of the 2017 International Champions Cup. The teams will meet on 20 July at the NRG Stadium in Houston, kick-off at 03h30 CAT (21 July).
United come into this preseason clash having had an up-and-down 2016/17 campaign under manager Jose Mourinho. They won both the League Cup and the UEFA Europe League (to claim a place in the Champions League for next season), but their failure to mount any realistic challenge for the Premier League title was a major disappointment.
City manager Pep Guardiola had an even tougher time, admitting that the 2016/17 season was a failure by his standards. The Citizens won zero trophies, but at least they finished in third place to secure Champions League football. Both sides have made major acquisitions to strengthen their squads in the offseason. United pulled the rug out from under Chelsea to secure the services of striker Romelu Lukaku, while Victor Lindelof beefs up their defence.
For City, they will hope to have ended their goalkeeping crisis with the signing of Brazilian Ederson from Benfica, the capture of Bernardo Silva secures a long-term successor for David Silva and Kyle Walker will bring much-needed energy to the wingback role. United and City have clashed in 150 matches in their rivalry, with the team in red claiming 59 wins and 211 goals compared to 44 wins and 206 goals for the team in sky blue.
The Red Devils and the Citizens met three times last season: Guardiola’s men won 2-1 in the Premier League in September 2016, Mourinho’s charges claimed revenge with a 1-0 win in the League Cup the following month, and the teams’ most recent meeting was a goalless draw in the Premier League back in April.
