English Premier League
Manchester City
The curtain has come down on the closest title race the
English Premier League has seen in nearly a decade and while this weekend will have certainly left fans reeling at the thought of the gaping hole during that slot on a Saturday or Sunday that the beautiful game once filled (there is the
African Cup of Nations, UEFA Nations League Finals and pre-season still to look forward to).
Betway has followed every step of the football journey and will continue to do so in 2019/2020.
While those ‘Monday Blues’ sink in, we will be looking back at the brilliant team in blue and the numbers behind their magnificent success that stole the headlines and the hearts of fans across the globe during the last nine months of non-stop football drama.
Reds fans will be scratching their heads trying to recall the one game that runners-up Liverpool lost all season – a 2-1 defeat against the eventual champions at the Etihad Stadium back in January. Not even Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season of 03/04 would have been sufficient to take the trophy in 2019.
One thing is certain – the standard of the greatest league in the World has been set and if any of the chasers are going to catch a seemingly unstoppable City side they will need to endure, on the face of it at least, a magical, faultless season.
Where do we even begin?
Manchester City secured the league with a convincing come-from-behind
4-1 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion. Their
32nd win from 38 top-flight matches (a
win rate of 84.2% - the first title-winning side to break the 80% mark) taking them to
98 points – 2 points shy of the record century they achieved a year ago, but crucially
1 point ahead of Liverpool this time around.
Below is their astonishing form guide for the last 19 matches (second half of the season):
WWWWLWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
In this topsy turvy title race that saw the lead change hands on countless occasions (32 times to be exact) Man City spent
125 days at the summit, 16 fewer than the chasing Reds.
They scored
95 goals along the way (163 in all competitions which is a new record for a top-flight English team) which accounts for
8.8% of the 1072 goals scored by the 20 Premier League teams combined.
Sergio Aguero, City’s all-time record goal scorer narrowly missed out on his second Golden Boot as he finished on 21 for the season. The Argentine now has
230 goals in 334 appearances for the club.
City conceded the second-fewest number of goals in the league (
23) at an average of just
0.6 goals per game, keeping
20 clean sheets in the process.
The Citizens topped the rankings for shots taken (
683) while their passing stats were a league-best too. They notched up
26 676 passes for an average of
68.1% possession.
What about with Manchester City’s decorated manager Pep Guardiola? This was his
8th league title (2
nd with City) from 3 different countries – Spain (FC Barcelona), Germany (Bayern Munich) and England (Man City).
Sunday saw Pep lift his
26th major trophy – 5
th with Manchester City comprising two league titles (2017-18, 2018-19), two League Cups (2017-18, 2018-19) as well as the Community Shield (2018).
