2023 Formula One World Championship
2023 Austrian Grand Prix
Round 9
Red Bull Ring
Spielberg, Austria
Sunday, 2 July 2023
Fernando Alonso will be determined to win the
Austrian Grand Prix for the first time in his illustrious career and record his maiden victory of the season.
Most recent race
The Alfa Romeo driver finished second at the Canadian Grand Prix on June 18, missing out on an ever-elusive 33rd victory in the sport.
Alonso started the race in P2 after missing out on the pole position to race-winner Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT.
Formula One title ambitions
The accomplished racing driver is still placed third on the World Drivers' Championship standings having accumulated 117 points from seven races.
Alonso is nine points and 78 points behind second-placed Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT and leader, Verstappen respectively.
Why Alonso could win the 2023 Austrian MotoGP
The Spanish legend has finished second in two of the last three races on the 2023 Formula One World Championship calendar.
Alonso will be confident of going one step further by winning the Austrian Grand Prix and boosting his ambitions of winning his third Formula World title.
What did he say?
"I think it has been a tough race from the beginning," Alonso said after the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.
"When we lost a place at the start I thought that maybe that was already gone, P2, and I would have to concentrate on the guys behind, George [Russell] and the Ferrari's maybe. But then, yeah, we were able to overtake Lewis and we had a little bit more pace in that part of the race."
"We didn't have another Medium. That is something that you need to decide before qualifying. Sometimes you decide to go for one Medium, one Hard because you think it’s enough; sometimes two Hard, sometimes two Mediums," he added.
"Obviously with the very limited practice that we did on Friday, it was just a guess. I’m happy with the decision: for us the Hard was not a bad tyre at all and we were able to extend the stints, and in our car, it was a good tyre."
