Ghana look to avoid Madagascar upset

Ghana will face off with Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on June 1. 
 
The Black Stars drew 1-1 with Nigeria away in their last competitive match which was the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 29.
 
The draw extended Ghana's winless run to five matches in competitive matches having recorded three draws and two defeats.
 
The former African champions are undefeated in their last 16 matches at home in the AFCON qualifiers - winning 13 matches and drawing three as the hosts. 
 
“We have the character and what it takes to win the Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON],” Ghana Football Association (GFA) general secretary Prosper Harrison Addo said on Modern Ghana. 
 
“Regardless of what has happened in the past, we are four times champions and we will prepare adequately ahead of the two qualifying games and make sure we can win the AFCON next year. 
 
“In the second window, we will play some friendlies in other to position ourselves well ahead of the AFCON. We will have discussions with the technical team to ensure the team will be in good shape before the start of the tournament."

Meanwhile, Madagascar drew 1-1 with Tanzania at home in their last competitive game which was the 2022 World Cup qualifier game on 14 November 2021.
 
As a result, Barea are winless in their last two competitive matches having registered one draw and one defeat.
 
The Southern African side has failed to win their last two away matches in the AFCON qualifiers recording two consecutive defeats as the visitors. 
 
The last meeting between Ghana and Madagascar was on 25 May 2015.
 
Barea caused an upset by defeating Black Stars  2-1 in an international friendly (COSAFA Cup) match which was played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in South Africa.
