The Egyptian club of Al Ahly CF is the undisputed champion of the African continent and the most awarded of any Arab and African team. The Tout Puissant Mazembe is a Congolese football club based in Lubumbashi City and was founded way back in 1939. They are now one of the strongest and most decorated teams in Africa after winning the Champions League 5 times in 1967, 1968, 2009, 2010 and 2015. TP Mazembe made history by being the first African team to reach the final of the clubs’ World Cup in 2010 where they played a historic match against Inter Milan.

Another major Egyptian club from the Egyptian capital, Zamalek SC was founded in 1911 under the name “Kasr-Ennil”. They have won the Egyptian championship a total of 11 times and are 5 times African champions. Numerous famous players have represented the club and the national team of Egypt including Hassan Shehata, Hazem Emam, Nader El Sayed and more.
Hafia FC – Guinea

A dominant force in the 1970’s, Hafia FC is a legendary Guinean team and one of the greatest African teams of all time. They have won their local championship a total of 16 times, along with 3 African Cup of Champions titles. Cherif Souleymane, Mohamed Saylla and Amara Bangoura are just a few of the names amid other famous footballers to have played for Hafia FC.
Raja CA Casablanca – Morocco

Raja CA Casablanca remains the first Arab and African club to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000 in Brazil. Founded in 1949, Raja quickly came to dominate African football, seizing 11 national championships and 3 African Cup of Champions titles. Known as the Green Eagles, they compete locally with the Widad Athletic Club and have featured legendary players in the past like Salaheddine Bassir, Abdelmajid Dolmi, Reda Ereyahi, Mustapha El Haddaoui, Mohsine Moutouali and others.

Formed initially to represent the capital of Cameroon, the Canon Yaoundé club is became a dominant force on the African continent during the 1970’s. They won their local championship a total of 10 times, along with 12 local cups, 1 African Winners’ cup and 3 Champions League titles. Thomas N’kono, Emmanuel Kunde and Theophile Abega are just a few of the top names produced by the club who also played for the Cameroon national team.
Asante Kotoko FC – Ghana

Based in Ashanti, Asante Kotoko is a famous Ghanaian team renowned for their physical playstyle and technical ability. The club has dominated their national championship with 22 wins and holds 2 African Champions League titles.
ES Tunis – Tunisia

This legendary club from the capital of Tunisia was founded in 1919 and has gone on to achieve much success. The team leads their local competition with 25 championships and has won 2 CAF Champions League titles. They have reached the finals of CAF 6 times during their history. The club enjoys massive popularity in the Arab world and is also known for the great fervor of its supporters who were the first to introduce the infamous “ultra movement” into Africa.
Enyimba FC – Nigeria

The Aba Warriors is a Nigerian team that was only recently founded in 1976. Although the club is quite young compared to some others on this list, it still remains one of the most successful clubs in Nigeria. They have won the local championship a total of 7 times and they have won the African Cup of Champions 7 times. Some famous individuals who played for Enyimba FC include Mfon Udoh, Dele Aiyenugba, Romanus Orjinta and others.
JS Kabylie – Algeria

JS Kabylie is one of the leading clubs of Algeria and the African continent in general. The club has claimed multiple national and continental titles and was founded in 1946 in the Algerian city of Tizi Ouzou. This Algerian squad managed to with the CAF Champions League in 1981 and 1990. They also won the African Winners’ Cup in 1995, being the only Algerian club to ever win this competition.
ES Setif – Algeria

Founded in 1958, the Entente Sportive de Setif, known also as ES Setif and ESS, is the second most successful club to come out of Algeria. They have 25 national, regional and international titles, marking them as close contenders to JS Kabylie. The team represents the city of Setif and won the CAF Champions League in 1988 and 2014, as well as the Algerian championship on seven separate occasions.
Africa is the heart and home of many incredible clubs that, while successful in their own right, still have work to do to prove themselves on the African stage.
