2024 Tour de France
29 June–21 July 2024
Biniam Girmay is looking to make more history in the final week of the
2024 Tour de France as he bids to finish top of the points classification.
The Eritrean entered the history books when he became the first black African rider to win a stage of the famous race, sprinting to victory in Turin on July 1.
Girmay repeated the feat on stages 8 and 12 to put him 86 points clear of Jasper Philipsen in the race to win the sprint competition with one flat stage remaining.

The 24-year-old was guided safely through stage 14 at Pla d'Adet by his Intermarche–Wanty team-mates, picking up another seven points when he beat Philipsen in the intermediate sprint.
"The intermediate sprint wasn't part of my plan today to be honest, but suddenly Jasper tried to be there so I needed to follow him," Girmay said.
"It was not the plan for me but I saw that he went so I just opened my eyes and tried to follow him. Then finally we were not in the front but it was a nice finish from me and that's why I can feel a bit more confident. Today then we went just for a few small points.
"Honestly though, today was not that difficult because we had some benefits at the front, three minutes ahead of the bunch. So after the intermediate sprint I just continued, because I didn't want to wait immediately.
"We were already in front of the other guys so I just found a good gruppetto and stayed with them."
