The 2022 Open Championship, which is the 150th edition, will take place at the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland, between 14 and 17 July.

This event is often referred to as The Open or the British Open, and it is the oldest golf tournament in the world having been established in 1860.

The Open is one of the four men's major golf competitions, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the US Open.

The tournament is organised by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and it is included in the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Japan Golf Tour calendars

The current champion is Collin Morikawa, who won the 149th Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England with a score of 265.

This year's field is headlined by the likes of Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Burns and more.

This is set to be a 156-player field and they are scheduled to play out over four days as they battle it out for at least an $11.5 million purse.

Fifty of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking are among the top contenders, while 25 champion golfers are set to take part, including the likes of Tom Watson, Gary Player and Sir Nick Faldo.

American golf icon Jack Nicklaus admitted he was flattered to be asked to be an Honorary Citizen of St Andrews as the three-time Champion Golfer of the Year returned to the home of golf.

“It's pretty special, it’s the reason I'm back. There are a lot of reasons to be back, the 150th anniversary, the tournament, the whole thing but this is why I'm back,” he said.

“That’s pretty special, I think only two Americans have ever been honoured before, so it’s special and I'm very flattered. I'm sure it will be a very humbling experience for me.

“I declined to come back the last couple of times to St Andrews because it made my farewell in 2005, and I didn't want to come back and dilute that for what it was. It was fantastic then.

Harry Vardon is the most decorated golfer in the history of the Open Championship having won it a record six times.
