Ghana look for fast start in AFCON qualifiers

2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Group C

Ghana v South Africa

Cape Coast Sports Stadium
Kick-off  19:00

Ghana will look for a fast start to Group C of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when they host South Africa at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday 14 November 2019, kick-off at 19:00.

Group C will have gotten underway by the time the two former AFCON champions meet, with Sudan (also a former African champion) and Sao Tome e Principe opening the pool on Wednesday 13 November with their clash in Omdurman.

South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams

Ghana come into the clash looking to bounce back from their disappointing round of 16 exit at the AFCON in Egypt earlier this year, where they were eliminated by Tunisia to see their wait for a first African title since 1982 further extended.

The pressure is high on coach Kwesi Appiah, who needs a strong showing against Bafana Bafana (and a good qualification campaign overall) to keep his spot as Black Stars boss.

One of Appiah’s surprise call-ups for this match is Nordsjaelland midfielder Mohammed Kudus, who believes his first call-up to the senior team will only be the start of grea things to come.

"It's good news but I also believe it's just the beginning and now I need to work even harder,” said the 19-year-old.

"I knew the national coach had been here in FCN [FC Nordsjaelland] to visit and that there was a chance this could happen.

"This is one of the biggest things that can happen, and it has come early. It's a good step for me but it's just the beginning."

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey

In head-to-head stats, Ghana and South Africa have met in 12 previous matches. Bafana Bafana have claimed four wins compared to three for the Black Stars, while five games have been drawn.

The teams met in a friendly ahead of the 2019 AFCON back in June. The match, played in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as part of the teams’ preparations for the tournament in Egypt, ended in a goalless stalemate. Ghana’s last home match against SA – a World Cup qualifier way back in June 2004 – ended in a 3-0 win for the West Africans heavyweights.

The teams will go on to play a further qualifying match each within days of their meeting in Cape Coast: South Africa will be at home to Sudan on Sunday 17 November, while Ghana will be away to minnows Sao Tome e Principe the following day.
