Arsenal look to avoid a slip-up against the Toffees

2019/20 Premier League

Round 27

22-24 February 2020

Arsenal will look to avoid a slip-up when they host Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 23 February 2020, kick-off at 16:30. The match is one of 10 spread from 22 to 24 February for the 27h round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Arsenal come into the match on the back of one of their best wins of the season, crushing Newcastle United this past Sunday evening thanks to goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette. The Gunners are now just six points off a place in Europe next season.

“A week ago before we went to Dubai and we drew at Burnley everything looked like it was too far and it’s going to take an incredible run to do it [qualify for Europe], but today it feels a little bit closer. But it’s going to depend on us and we need to improve as a team and be more consistent over 90 minutes,” said manager Mikel Arteta.

Everton were in fine form prior to their break, racking up a 3-1 home win over Crystal Palace on February 8 in which Bernard, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all netted. The Toffees have lost just one of their last 11 Premier League matches, with only Liverpool collecting more points in the same sequence.

The man behind the turnaround at Everton is manager Carlo Ancelotti, who noted: “You have to explain your work and strive to build a relationship with your players; you have to try to know them as a character. You have to find the right combination between your idea of football and the idea of the players. The work of the manager is to combine these ideas.”

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

In head-to-head stats, Arsenal and Everton have met in 213 previous matches. The Gunnners have claimed 106 wins compared to 61 for the Toffees, while 46 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Goodison Park in December 2019, they played out a goalless stalemate – the first 0-0 draw in the rivalry since 2013.
