The Baggies suffered a second straight defeat to start their 2020/21 season, going down 5-2 away to Everton last weekend. West Brom opened the scoring at Goodison Park but Kieran Gibbs' sending off on the cusp of half-time proved decisive with head coach Slaven Bilić also sent for an early shower by referee Mike Dean after reacting in anger to the decision.
The result followed a 3-0 defeat at home to Leicester City on the opening weekend of the season, leaving West Brom with a mountain to climb before hosting the Blues.
Chelsea slumped to a 2-0 loss at home to champions Liverpool on Sunday with another costly error from Kepa Arrizabalaga overshadowing a dismal display. The London club kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
The signing of Édouard Mendy adds to a long list of new arrivals at the club during the current transfer window and head coach Frank Lampard has called for patience from the club's fans.
"Every team that's been successful has had time, has had a process and our process starts here. Not from last year," said Lampard.
"Last year we couldn't do much business so we worked and worked and worked to come fourth.
"Our objectives, our expectations are higher, but we will take some time. "
