2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 3

Leeds United v Chelsea

Elland Road
Leeds, England
Sunday, 21 August 2022
Kick-off is at 13h00

Chelsea will look to stay in touch with the Premier League's early frontrunners when they do battle with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday, August 21.

Thomas Tuchel's side trail joint-league leaders Manchester City and Arsenal by two points after going unbeaten in their opening two games of the new season.

The Blues kicked off proceedings with a 1-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park before playing out to a tense 2-2 draw with London neighbours Tottenham on Sunday.

Both Tuchel and Spurs counterpart Antonio Conte were shown red cards after the final whistle following a fiery altercation between the pair when they shook hands.

Commenting on his spat with Conte, the German said: "I compare it to two players who have a bit of a fight on the pitch but nothing happens, nobody gets injured.

"It's Premier League football, the two managers got involved today because both were fighting for our teams. That was it.

"Nobody got insulted, we didn't have a fistfight. For me it's not a big deal. It was part of the game today. I enjoyed it, I think he enjoyed it as well! It was nothing bad."

The West Yorkshire outfit are also undefeated after two matches, having beaten Wolves 2-1 on the opening weekend followed by a 2-2 draw with Southampton at St Mary's this past weekend.

They have now gone four games without defeat since Chelsea came away from Elland Road with a 3-0 triumph in the corresponding fixture last season.

Whites head coach Jesse Marsch was disappointed that they squandered a two-goal lead against the Saints, with Rodrigo's brace being cancelled out by goals from Joe Aribo (72') and Kyle Walker-Peters (81').

"We're disappointed with a point. We have to see through the trees a bit and see that the performance was quite good," Marsch said.

"On set-pieces, we were stable and finding ways to be dangerous. The glass is half full. The group is making progress and individuals are on a high level.

"At 2-1 we switched to five at the back. It's a little frustrating. Tactically making that shift, to still get beat again it's painful. However, there's a bit of maturity at play. We're still a young team.

"Of course, there are a couple of changes and looking back on it, can we manipulate the game a little earlier? Maybe."
