Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
23 July – 8 August 2021
The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games wrapped up this past weekend, bringing to an end over two weeks of world-class sporting action from a huge variety of disciplines in Japan’s capital city. We take a closer look at some of the more fascinating triumphs of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.
One of the major stars on the Athletics track was Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah, who successfully defended her gold medal in the Women's 200m in a stunning 21.53, making her the second-fastest woman in history for the event. She is also the first woman in history to win back-to-back Olympic Gold medals in the 100m and 200m sprint events.

"It feels amazing to win two golds again. I have had a rough week. I haven't slept after the 100m final," Thompson-Herah said.
Thompson-Herah closed hard to hold off a charging Christine Mboma of Namibia and rising United States sprints star Gabby Thomas in the 200m, having earlier led a Jamaican lockout of the podium in the 100m ahead of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson.
"Honestly I am so tired," Thompson-Herah said. "My legs just need some rest. I've done so many races in the last few days, but I am very grateful.”
Jamaica’s dominance of Women’s sprinting was not matched on the Men’s side, with Rasheed Dwyer’s seventh-place finish in the 200m their only representation in the finals. This after the great Usain Bolt claimed a 100m and 200m double Gold at each of the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
“I felt like we had a good crop of athletes for the last couple of Olympics,” Bolt explained. “So for me, it really bothers me to know that this is where we are right now, where most of the world is ahead of us. I’m just disappointed because I think we do have the talent, it’s just to harvest it and people to take the training seriously and get it done.”
