The Reds are winless in their last two home matches in this competition having lost 1-0 to Italy's Inter Milan, before drawing 2-2 with SL Benfica of Portugal.

They were able to progress to the next round on each occasion as they had won their first-leg matches away with a two-goal margin.

Prior to their matches against Inter and Benfica, Liverpool were undefeated in six home matches including wins over Italy's AC Milan and FC Porto of Portugal.

Liverpool will be banking on the home support to help propel the team to a crucial first-leg win with the second-leg match set to be played in Spain on May 3.

Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool captain and midfielder, is wary of Villarreal, who have caused major upsets on the way to reaching the semi-finals.

“They’ve knocked out Juventus [and] Bayern [Munich] - two very good sides," Henderson said.

"They’re a very good team in their own right. That’ll be a very difficult tie - both legs. We need to be 100 per cent ready, give it everything and hopefully we can progress to the final.”
