2019 Formula 1 season, Round 3
Chinese Grand Prix
Shanghai International Circuit
Sunday 14 April
Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari will go in search of their first win of the 2019 Formula 1 season when Round 3 rolls into the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday 14 April.
Vettel has thus far failed to even trouble the podium in the opening two races, coming home in fourth and fifth place in Australia and Bahrain respectively. This leaves the four-time champion fifth on the drivers’ standings, already 22 points behind leader Valtteri Bottas.
The need to reclaim some momentum is key for the German driver, but in this regard he faces a threat from within his own team, as fellow Ferrari pilot Charles Leclerc seems to have adapted beautifully to his new surroundings.
The youngster is not only ahead of Vettel in the drivers’ championship, but he also seems to have usurped the veteran in terms of outright pace: Leclerc would have comfortably won the previous round had his car not suffered a technical issue late in the race.
Nonetheless, he came in third place for his first-ever F1 podium and showed up his more experienced teammate, who suffered a quizzical spin after being overtaken by Lewis Hamilton.
Cutting out such rookie errors will be key to Vettel’s hopes of not only reclaiming the position as the fastest Ferrari, but building a bid for a fifth world title in 2019.
