ARSENAL VS CARDIFF CITY – THE EMIRATES STADIUM
This match will mark the first for Cardiff City since the disappearance of their club-record signing Emiliano Sala last week and the absence of the star striker will surely make the task of notching up a first top-flight victory over Arsenal since 1961 even more difficult.
The Gunners were dumped out of the FA Cup on Friday evening after a rather dismal performance, by arch rivals Man United in the same week that they turned in a top-class showing to defeat Chelsea and keep their UEFA Champions League ambitions alive. Unai Emery’s men have now lost five of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
The Bluebirds will be eager to earn something from Tuesday’s match, in honour of Sala, for whom a minute’s silence is expected to be held prior to kick-off. Cardiff are without a win in their last four matches during which period they have failed to score even a single goal. Neil Warnock’s side had the weekend off after they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Gillingham in the third round.
Arsenal have won all three of their Premier League meetings and will be looking to make it four-in-a-row on Tuesday. The last time the sides met at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger’s men came away 2-0 winners on New Year’s Day 2014 thanks to late goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott.
Alexandre Lacazette scored the winner in a 3-2 thriller when the pair clashed in the reverse fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium earlier in the campaign.
NEWCASTLE UNITED VS MANCHESTER CITY – ST JAMES PARK
The frustration will be growing fast for fans of Newcastle United following their latest setback – a 2-0 home defeat to Watford which saw them exit the FA Cup on Sunday. The Magpies beat Cardiff 3-0 last time out in the league for their first win in six in the division – a result which saw them leapfrog their opponents into 17
th place on the table, just one place and two points outside the relegation zone.
Manchester City continued their stunning scoring streak of late, beating Burnley 5-0 on Saturday to book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The Citizens have now netted an astonishing 33 goals in their last eight matches in all competitions at an average of 4.13 goals per game.
Man City have won five of the last six matches against Newcastle since a 2-0 home defeat to them in the League Cup in October 2014. Pep Guardiola’s side won 2-1 at the Etihad earlier in the campaign after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring for the home side – his second goal in his last three appearances against the Toon.
Sergio Aguero will be eager to add to his tally of 13 goals against Newcastle – the most against any opponent in his career.
MANCHESTER UNITED VS BURNLEY – OLD TRAFFORD
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s unstoppable reign continued this past weekend with that fine victory at Arsenal – his eighth win from eight matches in all competitions since replacing Jose Mourinho at the helm of the Red Devils.
Burnley saw their own five-match unbeaten run brought to an abrupt end by the defending Premier League champions in the FA Cup on Saturday although Sean Dyche will be quietly confident of his sides chances at Old Trafford on Tuesday having seen his side register three wins from their last four games in the league.
The Clarets have won just one of their previous 26 meetings with Manchester United in all competitions – a 1-0 win in the first Premier League match between the pair played at Turf Moor back in 2009.
The sides had to settle for a share of the spoils in this fixture last season, playing out to a 2-2 stalemate on Boxing Day with United having to come back from two goals down at half-time in front of their faithful home crowd with Jesse Lingard the star of the show as scored twice in the second half to steal a point.
Romelu Lukaku was back in the starting line-up for Man United’s trip to Arsenal on Friday and set up the opening two goals in fine fashion. The Belgian bagged a brace when the duo clashed in September, helping his team to a comfortable 2-0 win.
