Top F1 Drivers of all Time

Every sport in existence, including F1, has its greatest athletes of all time. And as we start of the 2018 season with Vettel's brilliant victory at the Australian Grand Prix, we at Betway want to take a look back at some of the best drivers to ever grace the sport of Formula 1.

#10 – Niki Lauda

With a 12-year career and 3 championships under his belt, Niki Lauda starts us off at number 10. Lauda is best known for surviving a near-fatal crash at the Nurburgring during the 1976 season.

#9 – Jackie Stewart

Jackie Stewart drove in just 99 Formula 1 races over the course of his 9-year career. With a win percentage of 27% however, Jackie won three championships during his time in F1 and won all of those titles in the final five seasons of his career.

#8 – Jim Clark

Jim Clark takes the number 8 spot. Clark was sadly killed in a Formula 2 crash in 1968 after opening the 968 Formula 1 season with a victory. Despite only racing 72 times, he won 25 races, and many wonder just how good he could have been had he not been killed in that fateful race.

#7 – Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso is still driving full-time in Formula 1 at the age of 36. His 32 career victories put him at number 6 on our list. He's also had two career championship wins, one of which he earned while being the youngest driver to ever win the title.

 

#6 – Juan Manuel Fangio

Fangio is difficult to compare to other drivers in this list because he only drove full-time in Formula 1 for 7 seasons. However, in those seasons, he won nearly half of all races he took part in giving him the best win percentage in the history of the sport. Fangio also won four championships consecutively, which to this day, only two other drivers have achieved.

#5 – Alain Prost

Known for his fierce rivalry with Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost makes this list at number 5 which is considerably lower than some would put him. This is due to the fact that Prost is still sitting 3rd on the all-time wins list depsite retiring in 1993. Others are catching up to him though as you'll find out further down this list.

#4 – Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna's 41 career victories put him at 4th on our list despite the fact that he only drove for 10 seasons. This begs the question, just how good would Senna have been had he not been killed in the wreck at San Marino in the 1994 season?

#3 – Sebastian Vettel

The recent Australian GP winner is number 3 on our list. Still driving full-time at the age of 30, Vettel's win tally has risen to 48 putting him dangerously close to Prost's 51. There is no reason to believe that Vettel won't get to the top 3 in the wins category as early as next season.

#2 – Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton is still driving full-time in F1 at the age of 32. His win total sits now at 62, a number so large that only 5 other drivers in history have achieved more than half of what he has. Having won three championships in the last four seasons, we can expect Hamilton to continue climbing lists like these.

#1 – Michael Schumacher

There is no real debate. Michael Schumacher is the greatest F1 driver to have ever lived. His 91 career victories in 306 races over 19 years in the sport put him in first place on the all-time wins list. His championship record is also extremely impressive, with seven. Only one other driver in history has ever achieved more than 4 and Schumacher holds titles for 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, giving him a record streak of five championships.
